Too Proud to Quit? Too Unhappy to Stay?

Is something keeping you in a job you hate? Are you suffering under a boss you can’t stand because you like your coworkers and don’t want to abandon them? Are you worried that people will think you “gave up?” For some people, knowing when it’s time to quit your job can be a challenge. Here are a few signs that you might be unhappy (and a few things you can do to find a better fit):

You start dreading Monday morning . . . on Saturday

Many of us have been there. You’re trying to enjoy the weekend, but feel like the weekend is always too short, and worrying about returning to work on Monday morning. Those Monday morning blues happen to everyone once in a while. After all, who doesn’t pine for a longer weekend? But, if every weekend is ruined by a creeping dread over your job, it’s probably time to move on.

You’re bored

When was the last time you felt challenged in your position in a good way? Are you spending most of your workday browsing the internet or watching the clock? This could be a sign that you need to find more meaningful work. Before you jump ship, talk to your employer about taking on more challenging projects. Learning new skills or expanding your role might help you feel more self-worth at work. However, if you’ve communicated with your boss and still feel like you’re not doing what you want to be doing, it may be time to leave.

You can’t picture a future there

Imagine yourself one year, five years, and ten years down the road. Does the thought of being at the same company excite you, or cause feelings of anxiety and depression? Those feelings can come from a variety of sources. Do you have a toxic boss? Does the company’s mission not match up with your personal values? Whatever the cause, there’s no sense in continuing to spin your wheels in a role with no future.

Once you’ve finally established that it’s time to look for a new job, it’s time to team up with a recruiter. They can even help you navigate your departure from your current job to ensure that you’re making the right move at the right time.

Some people recognize when it’s time for a change. Others may not realize how unhappy they are at work until they’ve spent way too long feeling unfulfilled.
