Congratulations! You’ve made it to the interview, a time when both you and your potential new employer have the opportunity for mutual assessment. To see if you’re the right fit for them, and if they’re the right fit for you, a hiccup-free interview is essential!

The key ingredients for a successful interview are preparation and performance; here’s what you need to know about both.

How to prepare for a job interview

Do your homework.

Research the company, the opportunity, and the interviewer. A successful job interview starts with a solid foundation of knowledge on the job-seeker’s part. You should understand the employer, the requirements of the job, and the background of the person (or people) interviewing you.

Brush up on your experience.

Review your work experience objectively and highlight your skills that are most critical for success. During the interview, make certain that you showcase your strengths, with brief examples to support each.

Be enthusiastic.

Generally, the candidate who shows the most enthusiasm for the job, the opportunity and the company is the one who gets the offer. If you desire this opportunity, convey a positive attitude, smile, maintain good eye contact, and express your genuine interest.

How to perform in a job interview

Get your game face on.

In the interview, be prepared to answer specific questions regarding your skills, knowledge, and experience. You can be persuasive as to why the employer should hire you by creating a vivid and detailed image of your achievements with supporting examples. That said, you want to keep your answers short and sweet during a job interview.

Interview them.

The interview is a two-way process. A portion of the interview should be dedicated to questions which you might have about the company and in particular the team you’ll be joining. These questions should be well thought-out and prepared ahead of the interview. Write them down if you feel the need to do so.

After the job interview

Always ask the interviewer for his/her business card. Send a thank you note immediately following the job interview (e-mail is perfectly acceptable). Reiterate your interest in the opportunity in the thank you note and briefly state how you think you could contribute to the team.
